On Monday Elton arrived at the recording studio at 8:00 am, and left at noon (12:00 pm), after he had finished recording 5/9 of his new album. On Tuesday he arrived at 8:10 am and left after he had completed recording the entire album while working at the same rate as the day before. At what time did Elton leave the recording studio on Tuesday?

A. 11:12 am
B. 11:22 am
C. 11:30 am
D. 3:12 pm
E. 3:22 pm

There's a typo in the question. Instead of 5959, it should be 5/9.

So, on Monday between 8 to 12, i.e. in 4 hours, Elton finished 5/9 part of the album; thus, 1 – 5/9 = 4/9 part of the album is left to be recorded.

Since the rate of recording is constant, the time taken on Monday to the time taken on Tuesday would be in the ratio of 5 : 4.

Thus, time taken on Tuesday = (Time taken on Monday)*4/5 = 4*4/5 = 16/5 hour = 3 1/5 hours = 3 hours 60/5 minutes = 3 hours 12 minutes

So, Elton would come out of the studio by 8:10 am + 3 hours 12 minutes = 11:22 am

The correct answer: B

Hope this helps!

We can create a proportion in which we let n = the time to complete the album:

(5/9)/4 = (4/9)/n

5/36 = 4/(9n)

45n = 144

n = 144/45 = 16/5 = 3 1/5 hours = 3 hours and 12 minutes

Since he arrived at 8:10 am on Tuesday, he left at 11:22 am.
