One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband is right, the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.

The core of the sentence is

critic wrote that X is wrong.

we need to find the OBJECT,X, in a noun clause

A. the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship

No auxiliary verb

B. the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship

C. honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship

D. the idea that honesty and trust is necessary to a relationship

E. the necessity of honest and trust to a relationship

I might be wrong here. I am not confident with my logic

Look at B and D eliminating the Subodinate clause " If...is right"

B and D repeat that again..

B-One critic wrote that the Idea that

D-One critic wrote that the Idea that

C- Honest and Trust express similar idea hence call for a singular verb

D- to a relationship is unidomatic

Choose A

idea of the necessity of honesty and trust

isn't it too awkard

agree that honesty and trust is singular , which can be the reason for eliminating B

But i don't go with you on subordinate in subordinate

Can you pls clarify?

Can you pls clarify?

you can eliminate D on unidiomatic part also.." to a relationship" IMO

secondly, look at both the constructions

i declare that "the council that takes care of people" be banned

here bold part is a proper object. "takes" is not a proper verb

One critic wrote that " the idea that honesty and trust is necessary to a relationship " is fundamentally wrong.

here the bold part is a clause.."is" a proper verb

so, I dont object to the construction "that" followed by "that" but I object the relative clause carried by the second "that"

A is not good for me too..but, I had to choose one

you mean to say

One critic wrote that "X" is fundamentally incorrect

In such a format "X" must be an object and not a clause IMO

so, dont hardwire that "clause" is incorrect

One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband is right, the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.

A. the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship => INCORRECT
B. the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship
C. honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship
D. the idea that honesty and trust is necessary to a relationship => INCORRECT
E. the necessity of honest and trust to a relationship => INCORRECT

I little confused over B and C

B: One critic wrote that the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.

THE IDEA is fundamentally wrong. => CORRECT

C: One critic wrote that honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.

One critic wrote is fundamentally wrong. => INCORRECT

This way, I tried to understand it. Is my understanding is correct?
I believe that it is correct.
