You got it!
(A) is problematic because of it's awkwardness. "The idea of the necessity of" is a clunky construction.
(C) read back into the statement, in addition to being an ungrammatical sentence, states the honesty and trust are wrong.
(D) uses 'is' to refer to honesty AND trust.
(E) Says that "..the necessity...is wrong," incorrectly removing the word 'idea'.
(B) has no errors, correctly stating the "the idea...is wrong" and correctly modifying the word 'idea' with the restrictive descriptor 'that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship.'
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks Eli. Just want to know the grammatical error in C.
"One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband is right, honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship is fundamentally wrong. (is fundamentally wrong..does not have any subject,....is this you are trying to emphasize!!!)

Hi Eli,
I choose Ans B based on the below understanding.
One critic wrote that if x is right, {then} y is wrong.
x- guide
y - idea
Here x and y are singular.
wrote that - should be followed by realtive clause.
In this sentence the relative clause contains if .. then structure.
End of senetence has "is" as verb. Hence, it should precede a singular noun.
One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband is right, the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.
A vs B
A: the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship --- here, noun idea is followed by a series of prepostional phrase, hence to make it concise, we can put prepostional clause in a that clause.
B: Correctly put the preopositional phrase in a that clause (the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship).
I have quick question in the original question.
Why do we need a comma after that (One critic wrote that, ) in the original sentence? Is it correct?
Your help is appreiciated.

A. the idea of the necessity of honesty and trust in a relationship
Idea of the necessity is not correct...Think of a sentence...I like his idea with respect to ..... OR The idea that we hatched in the basement will make us some moolah...
B. the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship
Cream of the Crap...Best answer IMO
C. honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship
honesty cannot be wrong...
D. the idea that honesty and trust is necessary to a relationship
To a relationship is wrong...verses in a relationship...
E. the necessity of honest and trust to a relationship
Necessity cannot be wrong

Read it back into the sentence.ansumania wrote:what is wrong with C though?
One critic wrote that, if the best-selling guide to finding a husband is right, honesty and trust are not necessary in a relationship is fundamentally wrong.
The second 'is' doesn't have a subject, so we end up with an improper sentence. (C) reads great if you leave off the part of the sentence that comes after the underlined portion, which is why it's a tempting trap, but if you remember to check the entire grammatical structure, the result is an error.

The commas before an after the bit "if....is right" indicate that the isolated part is a modifying or descriptive phrase. This means that, grammatically, the rest of the sentence must read correctly and sensibly with that phrase ignored. In this case, using the correct answer:
'One critic wrote that...the idea that honesty and trust are necessary in a relationship is wrong.'
In fact, when you see such isolated phrases, it's often helpful to ignore them on the first read through; this can bring certain grammatical errors to your attention. Don't ignore them completely, however, as such phrases have rules regarding their placement in the sentence and their connection to the ideas that they modify.
