Veterinarian/Math Scores

by DVMOhio » Fri Apr 03, 2009 3:11 am
Hello:
I've really enjoyed reading your information and it's been very helpful. I'm a veterinarian with a 3.8 undergrad and a 3.3 in veterinary school. I've been working for 10 years and own a practice. I'd like to get into a top MBA program, but after taking the GMAT twice (and a GMAT prep intensive) I still only scored a 530 both times. It seems something is lacking somewhere in my education that could help raise my GMAT score. Would I be better off taking math or business courses than any more GMAT prep? Does this mean a good MBA program is out of the question?

Dear DVMOhio,

With the amount of experience you have, are you considering executive MBA programs? Depending on your career goals, I think you might find an executive MBA program to be more beneficial to your development. EMBA programs generally have a wider range of GMAT scores than traditional, full-time programs, so your 530 is not necessarily a deal-breaker. If you are set on going to a full-time program, then you will have some restrictions on where you might be able to go. There are some great programs in the top 50 that would welcome your application, but it would probably be helpful to get your score up closer to (or above) a 600. If you are struggling with the quantitative section, then I would suggest taking some math classes (i.e., college algebra, finite math, calculus). Not only might they help with retaking the GMAT, but they will be helpful to you in business school.

Good luck,
Lisa

Oh, sorry. I should have told you that I am applying for the executive programs. Do you think I have a shot? Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it.

I do think you have a shot at executive programs, but would encourage you to speak with each school's admissions office directly regarding your entire profile. You should be able to get a sense of how much your GMAT might hurt you (if it will).

Good luck,
Lisa
