Mc Graw Hill Test -3 CR2

by neha.patni » Mon Jul 19, 2010 3:24 am
A study by a group of dentists has concluded that regular use of a certain brand of mouthwash is as effective as flossing in preventing gum disease. The mouthwash company has released a television ad suggesting that people who do not like flossing can now rely solely on mouthwash and brushing to maintain good dental health. A leading manufacturer of dental floss brought a lawsuit against the mouthwash company demanding that the advertisement be discontinued on the grounds that it is misleading.

Which of the following, if true, most supports the mouthwash company's defense that its advertisement promotes greater public health?

A. Since the dental floss company is protesting the advertisement only to protect its own economic self-interest, it
cannot be seen as representing greater public health.
B. Greater public health is best served if people use both mouthwash and dental floss, a combination that has been shown
to be more effective than either method used alone.
C. Many people object to flossing because it is painful and causes their gums to bleed.
D. Since, on average, people are twice as likely to use mouthwash regularly as to floss regularly, the advertisement will increase the number of people who take effective action against gum disease, a serious public health problem.
E. Gum disease has been proven to have links with the early onset of heart disease, one of the top three threats to public health in terms of mortality.m

IMO C. D says that advertisement will get benefited, what about people. Advertisement is clearly misleading people. On the other hand if mouthwash company somehow shows that people only object to flossing, because of this this reason then it is not a misleading to people, since it is a fact. Therefore, I think C is correct answer here.

the stimulus discuss a specific group of people: "people who do not like flossing". it does not describe people as a whole ( ie anyone ).

we need an answer that supports ( strengthens ) the mouthwash company's defense that it is promoting greater public health.

answer C addresses this specific group and supports the arguement.

i think its D only

most supports the mouthwash company's defense

A. no as flossing is related to gum health also hence we cannot neglect public health-doest not support anybody
B. both method then it supports both the company not only to mouthwash
C.though flossing is painful but it is in favour of public health. there are many treatments are there those are painful but still is under practice. so painful of floss doest not support the mouthwash company's defence.
D. since mouthwash company is concerned for flossing and also to gum dieases and its argue is correct that people can mouthwash twice a day than flossing regularly hence it giving a solution for this problem.

this most supports the mouthwash company's defence than flossing company's

E.out of scope.

IMO C.

The argument does not talk about cures of gum diseases. It talks about the prevention of the gum diseases.
Maintaining good public health should be preventing the gum diseases.

Now the advertisement by the mouthwash company assumes that there are people who do not use floss.
The floss company says that the ad is misleading because such people do not exist.

C says that yes there are such people and gives a ground to the mouthwash company to defend itself.

I too went for D...

D talks about serious public health problem. C talks about flossing but does not talk about serious health problem...

Hi Guys,

What is OA?

I feel the answer is C - Mouthwash compnay aid states"suggesting that people who do not like flossing "

So for adverstising company to defend , it emphasise on the valid reasons why the flossing is not opted,i.e
"Many people object to flossing because it is painful and causes their gums to bleed."
