Australian embryologists have found evidence that suggests that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal, and its trunk originally evolving as a kind of snorkel.

suggesting that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal and that its trunk originally evolved

or

to suggest that the elephant is descended from an aquatic animal and that its trunk originally evolved...

I am confused whether we should use " to suggest" or "suggesting".. Both are modifying "evidence". SO how to go about this kind of scenario?

How to pick a verbal( particple vs infinitive form)

Hey bro,

Actually in the original question the choice with "suggesting..." ends in "...evolving", which is why it is incorrect.

Otherwise I don't see why you should prefer infinitives to participles/gerunds, they both look fine in this context - looking fwd to expert answers.

Hey,

No what I was saying is that if you alter them to this form, I don't see why either one is more correct than the other - they are both acceptable usage. I am pretty sure a GMAT question will never expect you to distinguish between these two :)

So in short, hopefully you will never have to make this kind of a choice - there will be other killer words to eliminate one of the verbal choices. (in this case - evolving)
