Gave my GMAT today and came away with a very low score. I dont know what happened. I learned a very important lesson today to achieve results in Verbal section of the GMAT, You cannot trust your ear. You have to know the rules for achieving a good score. In my prep, i focused primarily on quant and thought verbal could be tackled easily without much prep, i was so wrong. Had i got somewhere in the 30s for verbal, i would have got a score of around 650. I will give the exam again in November and this time, i will prepare properly and give more concentration on the verbal section. Any recommendations on which guides or books i should look to?

I used to be ace when in school when it came to RC but the RC level in the GMAT is on whole other level. Primarily i blame the odd topics of the RCs. Some RC, i find to be really boring and i dont like reading the whole content which leads to confusion when it comes to giving the answers. Any ideas on how to tackle this?

For SC and CR go in for the Manhattan guides. Make it a point to complete all the problem sets at the end of each chapter as they help a lot in grasping and retaining the concepts learnt. Once you are through with the guides practice about 20 questions of SC and CR everyday. You should be able to answer the SC questions in about 60 seconds and the CR questions in about 90 seconds, so that you have sufficient time to tackle the RC.

How many practice tests did you give before appearing for the GMAT?

I gave 4 CAT tests. 2 from the GMAT prep software, 1 from platinum GMAT and 1 from veritas. I also gave 2 other GMAT review tests given in my course material

That is on the low side. Go through the manhattan books and start giving tests so that you develop an internal clock and just know when you have wasted too much time on any question. Try to enjoy the RC. It is a bit hard at first but once you give in enough practice you should be fine. As for the tests in my opinion MGMAT are the best ones.

I was really not prepared for this section and wasnt expecting my score to be very good.
