Verbal help for non-native english speaker

Hello Everyone,

I am originally from India and have been pursuing my bachelors in the US. I am planning to give the GMAT. I am not worried about Quant/Math cause I am an engineering student. However I am highly concerned about verbal. Even in my SAT's about 3-4 years ago, I got a 600 in verbal even though i had 760+ in my Math and SAT II exams.

I am aiming for 700+. By reading most of the posts on this website, I have found that most people had given themselves 3 months to prepare. Considering my situation I know it will be difficult to reach such a high score. So I have decided to give myself 5 months. I am hoping that 5 months would be a good amount of time.

I am looking for help with the Verbal Strategy. Basically how to start, which books to refer to, tips, tricks. Should I opt for private tutoring like Kaplan or not?

I would highly appreciate it if you can help me with my preparation and beating the GMAT.

I see the post is getting views but no replies... I would highly appreciate it if some one could help me on this. I hoping to prepare myself for 4 months and then join Manhattan prep/ Veritas/ Kaplan if required for additional help.

Hi,

It's hard to give advice because what works for native speakers may not necessarily work for non-native ones.

From your post, you already seem to have a firm grasp on the language. The only thing I could think of to advise you before you start any test courses is to further enhance your knowledge by reading as many big name publications as you can. Also, try to focus on reading American publications, such as the New York Times, rather than British ones, as the writing styles are slightly different.

Reading through publications like this one daily will give you a better feel for the writing style you might expect on the GMAT. However, don't focus on just one publication - read through as many as you can get your hands on (remember also that the NY Times has its content on the web for free).

Hopefully other non-native speakers can share their thoughts with you as well. Good luck in your studying
