A) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and they would withdraw all its funding
B) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Goldman Sachs Inc. had financed Crystal Technologies, a tech company, as a venture capital investment and withdrew all its funding
C) Before its bankruptcy in 2008, Crystal Technologies, a tech company, had been financed by Goldman Sachs Inc. as a venture capital investment and the investor withdrew all its funding

Think the problem with option C is not the use of had been, but the use of 'and'. The use conjunction 'and', which gives us a feeling that Goldman Sachs Inc and the Investor are different. In this case Goldman Sachs is the investor. So option C is out.


I think the answer is E.

I think, 'had been' is not the issue. C is wrong because it has run-on sentence.
Please find below my inputs.

--> Here 'who' refers to 'Goldman Sachs Inc.', which is a thing and WHO can modify only people so usage of who is incorrect.

Yeah actually overlooked the reference of 'who'. Yes who is used only to modify people. So D must be the correct answer

In MGMAT SC 5th Ed. guide, on page no. 109, it is mentioned that :
The words before and after indicate the sequence of events clearly and emphatically enough to make the use of the Past Perfect unnecessary.
