vanilla to choco

store a sells two flavours, vanilla and choco. on friday, the ratio of vanilla to choco cones was 2to3, if it had sold 4 more vanilla the ratio would be 3 vanilla to 4 choco. how many vanilla cones did the store sell on friday?

The ratio is 2x/3x on friday

(2x +4)/3x = 3/4

9x = 8x +16

x = 16

No multiply 2 by 16 and you get 32.

Why do you multiply by 2. I too got 16.

The original ratio 2:3 sets up as 2x/3x because we don't know if they sold 2 and 3 respectively or 4 and 6 or any other ratio that would reduce to 2/3. Then we are told to add 4 to the numerator so we get:

2x+4 3
_____=___
3x 4

If we cross multiply to solve for x we indeed get 16, however we must plug that into the original equation 2x/3x to get the correct number that was sold of each type.
