The number of passengers on a certain bus at any given time is given by the equation P = -2(S - 4)2 + 32, where P is the number of passengers and S is the number of stops the bus has made since beginning its route. If the bus begins its route with no passengers, what is the value of S when the bus has its greatest number of passengers?

Excellent question, I think answer is E
but will be pleased if somebody can please explain a quick way to solve it, i just put the values of S in the equation and looked for the biggest value of P but i am not sure that this is the right way to approach a problem like this,
quant whims are welcomed with some explanation......

this was the explanation provided in the MGMAT

The bus will carry its greatest passenger load when P is at its maximum value. If P = -2(S - 4)2 + 32, the maximum value of P is 32 because (S - 4)2 will never be negative, so the expression -2(S - 4)2 will never be positive. The maximum value for P will occur when -2(S - 4)2 = 0, i.e. when S = 4.

The correct answer is C.

First I got confused seeing the equation.

I think its (s-4)^2

P = -2(S - 4)^2 + 32

When u sub other values we need to add 32 with one negative value which ll decrease P.

Only S=4 adds 32 with 0 and gives P=32 which is high.

I think Selango corrected the equation very well.

It should be P = -2(S - 4)^2 + 32, in this case without any doubt the answer option is C.

Hi alivapriyada, i request you to pls check the question again

and if P = -2(S - 4)2 + 32 is what equation actuall is, as stated by question s is no of stops, so s has to be postivie integer

s=1,2,3,4.....

if s=1,p=44
if s=2,p=40
if s=3,p=36
if s=4,p=32 and so on..

The correct statement, as u have mentioned, is p = -2(s-4)^2+32

I came across the same question when i took one of the tests...
