vaccinated word problem.

In a certain region, the number of children who have been vaccinated against rubella is twice the number who have been vaccinated against mumps. The number who have been vaccinated against both is twice the number who have been vaccinated only against mumps. If 5,000 have been vaccinated against both, how many have been vaccinated only against rubella?

A. 2,500
B. 7,500
C. 10,000
D. 15,000
E. 17,500

please explain as well.

R = 2M - equation 1

Let x be the number vaccinated against both
x = 2M.

since R and x both equate to 2M

R = x.

Hence 5000 is the answer , but i do not see that in the choice at all?

Is there something missing?

Yes.. you missed an important point here...

it asks for only against rubella, not just rubella.

So, its given, R and M = 5000 (Since both are vaccinated)

So, only Mumps would be 5000/2=2500
=> Mumps =5000+2500=7500

and we know, Rubella =twice of Mumps=15000

So, only Rubella would be, 15000-5000=10,000 (since 5 ,000 is the no. vaccinated fr both).

It is basically a Venn Diagram prob.
