Patrick Woodroffe is a poet and painter that is able to make a living at it
(A) Patrick Woodroffe is a poet and painter that is able to make a living at it
(B) Patrick Woodroffe is able to make a living as a poet and painter
(C) A poet and painter, Patrick Woodroffe is able to make a living at it
(D) Patrick Woodroffe makes a living as a poet and a painter
(E) By writing poetry and painting is how Patrick Woodroffe makes a living

Please help me with this , im confused :(

THAT can b used to modify human entity or not ??
In Manhattan SC its written that clauses led by pronoun THAT cant modify people
and sumwhere else i read that THAT can modigy both people and things .........
have my exam on 1st f Nov ....

IMO, here 'who' would be a better choice, but since theres are no choices using 'who'
D seems the most concise way of writing the sentence.

This question is not testing the usage of "that". In this question I will go with D. D is best and concise and imparts correct meaning.

Regarding the usage of "that" - According to GMAT, "that" cannot modify people. You should use "whose" and "who".
Please refer Og-12 #110 SC. Moreover, just consider these few sentence,

Patrick, that is a poet and a painter, - awkward
patrick, who is a poet and a painter, - perfect
patrick, whose poetic and painting skills... - perfect

I hope you understand the difference

Please note that in GMAT "whose" can also modify places.


What is "somewhere" refers to - Is it any GMAT specific material ?

"is able to" is redundant...

But I feel, the meaning also changes slightly with 'able to'. 'able to' brings in the struggling effect and since this is also mentioned in the original sentence, I preferred retaining it.

Any thoughts on this?

Hi mankey, I think the problem with B, apart from not being concise, is the absence of an article "a" in front of the word poetry.
Shouldn't it say a poet and a painter ??
