Use Of That And Which As Modifier

Expert replies
by Soumita Ghosh » Thu Feb 28, 2013 8:27 pm
I just wanted to clear my concept. So I am posting this.

Question regarding use of that in the sentence as modifier:

1) Can we use That as modifier without comma? For example:your all dresses that you gave me last night were really beautiful.

2) Can we use That before comma? For example: Your all dresses that, you gave me last night were really beautiful.

3)Have I used That in this sentence correctly? For example: Your all dresses, that you gave me last night were really beautiful. I used That in this sentence after Comma so is this correct use?

Question regarding use of which as modifier in the sentence:

1) Can we use Which as modifier without comma? For example:your all dresses which you gave me last night were really beautiful.

2)Can we use Which before comma? For example: Your all dresses which, you gave me last night were really beautiful.

Yes, but not in the example that you have stated (where which is used as a relative pronoun). This is most common when which is used as a part of prepositional phrase. An official example:

Declining values for farm equipment and land, the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, are going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

against which is prepositional phrase (well..because against is a preposition) and so, there is no comma before which).
2)Can we use Which before comma? For example: Your all dresses which, you gave me last night were really beautiful.
In most cases there indeed is a comma before which. So, if there is a comma after which, we are talking about a situation where there is a comma both before which and after which.
