Commas are far more common in SCs than semicolons because commas are a built-in part of several grammar rules:
Commas can be used to:
1) introduce modifying and intervening descriptive phrases
2) separate items in a list
Semicolons are used when a long sentence can be broken into 2 pieces, that talk about the same general subject, and could each be individual sentences on their own.
