There are number of uses of this word 'that'. It acts as a relative pronoun (to introduce modifier), subordination conjunction (to join dependent clause to an independent clause) Please post the questions and then you will be understand better.

I only knew of the usage of "that" as relative pronoun. Can you elaborate more on the usage to join dependent clause and independent clause. That is the first I am hearing...:)

- from Old English thancian;
- akin to Old English thanc gratitude

There is also the "that" introducing noun clauses ("That the GMAT is hard cannot be denied.")
