Usage of Although

Expert replies
by ankit.tango » Thu Jun 16, 2011 8:57 am
"Although" is a subordinator i.e. it creates a subordinate clause. It also introduces contrast within a sentence. Is it a rule that "although" should come in the beginning of the sentence?
For ex- which one is correct?
a) Although i take frequent naps, i study effectively.
b) I study effectively, although i take frequent naps.
c) I take frequent naps, although i study effectively.

Can the position of "although" be considered a criteria for selecting the answer choices?

As far as I know, the location of "although" in the sentence has no bearing whatsoever. The GMAT tests grammar and logic of usage. The appropriateness of "although" in terms of the overall meaning of the sentence will be what is tested.

k. thanks for the abrupt reply. :). So on the basis of rules of grammar above all three options are correct?

The placement of "although" in each one is fine.

"Although" I'm not sure if there is enough of a contrast between studying effectively and taking frequent naps to warrant the use of "Although". :-)
