This is not a sentence correction question. But I would like to take your opinion on the below sentence. My aim is to explain the sentence parts of the below sentence and get your feedback. This taken from recent article.

Middle-aged women, many of whom reduced their working hours, limiting their earning power and ambition, when they had kids or, later, found themselves having to care for their parents, are in a particularly vulnerable spot these days, as they're increasingly called upon to supplement or take over the lion's share of family money-making.


This sentence has two clause.
1. Middle-aged women are in a particularly vulnerable spot these days (Main Clause)
2. as they're increasingly called upon to supplement or take over the lion's share of family money-making
"as" in the second clause is used as a coordinating conjunction

Subject of the Sentence : Middle-aged women
Verb : are

Modifier: many of whom reduced their working hours, limiting their earning power and ambition
It is a noun modifier clearly modifies Middle-aged woman.

I don't know what this part of the sentence doing here "when they had kids or, later, found themselves having to care for their parents". This phrase explains the situation of the modifier. Is this correct?

I know that it may sound awkward for some people. But, I think this is one of the way to understand tough SC questions.
