Because a surfeit of undergraduate students has sent class sizes soaring, the university administration has announced that it will hire more faculty members for the next school year.

A) Because a surfeit of undergraduate students has sent class sizes soaring,
B ) Because of soaring class sizes, which is due to a surfeit of undergraduate students,
C) Because class sizes have been sent soaring, which resulted from a surfeit of undergraduate students,
D) Due to soaring class sizes, from a surfeit of undergraduate students,
E) Due to a surfeit of undergraduate students, with the result that class sizes have been sent soaring,

Any sentence that starts with a 'because' confuses me. All of these sound odd so its a good practice.

IMO A.

Replace due to by caused by - you will immediately recognize the problems in D and E.

C has mistakes written all over it.

B suffers from incorrect modification - which is due to a surfeit of undergraduate students is modifying soaring class sizes.

soaring class sizes are not due to a surfeit of undergraduate students, rather soaring of class sizes is due to a surfeit of undergraduate students.

A is best. It also establishes the cause and effect scenario much more clearly than the rest.

B - which not modifying what it is supposed to
C - Wordy
D - because preferred over due to when discussing a cause of sth
E - same as above

Can you please elaborate why B is wrong. Soaring class sizes is caused by surfeit of undergraduate students??

Yes...I havent found any satisfying explanation for B..
I think which is modifying soaring class sizes...(seems to be OK)
Another question -- Soaring class sizes is singular or plural? in the soln doc they say its plural..hence which "is" cannot modify it.....well i think its singular one..
Any more answers?
