two differ greatly

by uptowngirl92 » Tue Aug 04, 2009 4:40 am
While the two differ greatly in size, population, and geography, the GDP of the state of NJ in the USA is roughly equivalent to the entire country of Pakistan.

a. While the two differ greatly in size, population, and geography, the GDP of the state of NJ in the USA is roughly equivalent to that of the entire country of Pakistan.

b. While the two differ greatly in size, population, and geography, the state of NJ in the USA and the country of Pakistan have GDPs that are roughly equivalent.

Guys why is "a" wrong?

The two things that differ (in size, population etc.) are the countries and not the GDP

the sentence means to say that

"While the NJ and the Pakistan differ greatly in size, population and geography, the state of NJ in the USA and the country of Pakistan have GDPs that are roughly equivalent."

"While the NJ and the Pakistan differ greatly in size, population and geography" -> this modifier can't modify 'the GDP' as in choice a

Please look the Bold part. The bold part is modifying the part in Red.(GDP) Which in fact is wrong.
The bold part must modify a region/country etc.

In GMAT we term these kinds of problem as Apple to Oranges Comparison

Hope this Helps
