Among the many reasons for his defeat in the election was his arrogant assumption that his constituents were incapable of understanding economic conditions, and his unwarranted attack on his chief opponent.

Among the many reasons for A was/were A and B --> A and B is a compound plural subject therefore, we should use the plural verb were

A - Subject verb error
C - assumptions is incorrect because there is only one assumption mentioned
D - would be is incorrect usage here because the sentence talks about something that has already taken place. Further as pointed above -economic and economical have different meanings
E - Subject verb error


Thus B is the correct answer

One strategy for dealing with inverted sentence structures on the GMAT is to invert it again -- read "A and B was/were among the many reasons . . ."

D could be wrong for the reasons of "economics " but verb would is right here because he imagined this in the past so will becomes would .

Nope. would be indicates future tense.

E.g. Three days from now, I would be on my way to Sicily.

D leads to a crazy meaning that - his constituents' present knowledge notwithstanding, they would be incapable of understanding economics in future.

IMO B, Sentence is pointing to two reasons among many,hence were is applicable as the correct choice instead of was..

Hi Hasija,

I don't think so that sentence is pointing to two reasons as the second part is an IC because it's starting with a comma + and, it would have been two reasons if the second part didn't have the comma preceding and because in order to connect two parts simple conjuction and without a comma is used................if the sentence would have used "and" without comma preceding then the word assumptions would have been used in the sentence because now there would have been two reasons............I hope this clears........
