Among the many reasons for A was/were A and B --> A and B is a compound plural subject therefore, we should use the plural verb were

A - Subject verb error
C - assumptions is incorrect because there is only one assumption mentioned
D - would be is incorrect usage here because the sentence talks about something that has already taken place. Further as pointed above -economic and economical have different meanings
