Hi,

statement 1 is much simpler, so let's start there.

If x = y - 1, then x is 1 to the left of y on the number line. In other words, x is definitely smaller than y.

Is x > y? Definitely NOT... sufficient, eliminate B, C and E.

(2) since we have x/3 instead of x, this statement will be insufficient - we don't have the clear cut relationship we had in (1).

For example, we could pick x=9 and y=8. Is 9 > 8? YES

We could also pick x=0 and y=5. Is 0 > 5? NO

Since we can get both a YES and a NO answer, (2) is insufficient... eliminate D.
