If BE CD, and BC = AB = 3, AE = 4 and CD = 10, what is the area of trapezoid BEDC?

I think that the answer is B, 18.

The bigger triangle ACD is a special 6-8-10 triangle. So the area of the bigger triangle is 6 x 8/2 = 24 [note also that since the side AD is 8, then ED = 4]

Then, claculate the area of the smaller special triangle 3-4-5 ABE, which is 3 x 4/2 = 6

Then subtract the area of smaller triangle from the area of the bigger triangle and you get 24 - 6 = 18.
