k is 3 times greater than m.
does it mean k=3m + m = 4m?
or is it k = 3m?

i've found in PR Manual that it means k = 3m. But somehow I am not convinced. What do you feel?

k is three times greater than m means that m taken three times equals k or that k = 3m.
If you had smth like "k is 300% greater than m", then indeed k would be m + 3m or 4m.

So, do you mean that "x is 3 times greater than y" and "x is 3 times y" are the same?

x is 300% of y. this means x=3y
x is 300% greater than y means x = 3y + y = 4y

how is my initial statement (k is three times greater than m) different from this second statement (x is 300% greater than y)?

I've perhaps never faced problem with this type of translation. But just to be on the safe side, i'd like to know the difference, so that a simple mistake does not cost me a valuable point in GMAT.

Yes, "x is 3 times greater than y" is equivalent to "x is 3 times y".
The stmt that "x is 300% greater than y'' basically means that "x is WITH 300% of itself greater than y", only that it's in condensed wording.

easy way to think about it:

6 is 3 times greater than 2

therefore: 6=3x2
