I took a programming class during the summer of my sophomore year (summer '05) but did not end up finishing it as I had to go back home due to certain family problems and so got an AB on my transcript with a 0 Gpa for that course. It was a non-required course so I did not need to retake it.

Should I mention it in my optional essay or should I just ignore it as it was more than 4 years ago.

I wouldn't worry about it unless the 0GPA affected your overall grade point average. Not sure what AB is, but if it is anything like a W for Withdrawal, it should be fine. I personally had one quarter when I dropped my entire classload (changed majors) and never mentioned it--and was never asked about it.

Thanks for the reply bryan but it did affect my overall GPA as I was unable to drop it before the "withdraw" deadline. I think the AB is like an I which stands for incomplete. But it was a non-required course so I didnt need to take it again. In this case, should I mention it in the Optional essay?

I wouldn't worry about mentioning it under those circumstances...it's certainly not anything that would hinder your admittance, and if they are concerned about what happened, they could ask and you could tell them at that time.
