first of all, guys, what is "ellipsis"?

Secondly, can someone explain what the grammatical reason for using the plural "meet" and plural "have" is in the following question from an old GMAC exam?

The computer software being designed for a project studying Native American access to higher education will not only meet the needs of that study, but also has the versatility and power of facilitating similar research endeavors.
A.same as above
B.but also have the versatility and power to facilitate ---> OA
C.but it also has the versatility and power to facilitate
D.and also have the versatility and power of facilitating
E.and it also has such versatility and power that it can facilitate

I guess you didn't notice "will" in the sentence. The correct usage is "will have" not "will has".

hardik-- i did notice "will" and if i play by ear, i was able to get to the correct answer. however, i was wondering if there is a grammatical reason for that? that is, i want to be able to apply the same rationale/logic to other questions...thus the question. pls share if you know. thx.

If underline portion had started from meet the needs of that in place of has the versatility then ofcourse
it wud have read as You expected.

But here author intentionally put first verb 'MEET' as PLURAL and forced us to consider subject 'computer software ' as PLURAL and this is why we have to use HAVE in place of HAS as the 2nd verb.

Neither 'Meet' is a plural verb here nor computer software is a plural noun here

Lets remove non essential parts of the sentence:
The computer software will not only meet the needs of that study, but also have the versatility and power to facilitate similar research endeavors.

You can further divide this sentence into two different and simple sentences.

The computer software will meet the needs of the study.

The computer software will have the versatility and power to facilitate similar research endeavors.

I think you should be able to spot the main verbs in these sentences. As I said in my earlier post, the second sentence is using "have" because "will has" is not the correct verb, but "will have" is.

The computer software will has the versatility and power to facilitate similar research endeavors.

Does this sound right?? I dont think so..
