Severe and increasing numerous critics are pointing to deficiencies in the British legal system, deficiencies that seem to deny a proper defense to many clients who are charged with crimes.

The OA is C



My question is, how come "seem" doesn't have to be parallel with "pointing"... shouldn't the sentence read... "Severe and increasingly numerous critics are pointing to deficiencies in the British legal system seemING to deny a proper defense..."

In option C.

critics (noun) is preceeded by numerous.
numerous is a adjective---> adjective can modify a noun

numerous (adjective) is preceeded by increasingly.
increasingly is a adverb ----> adverb can modify a adjective.
so the first part of the sentence is right.

In the second part of the sentence "THAT" introduces a sub ordinate clause ..
a clause should hav a subject and a verb.

If seeming were present the clause would lack a verb ... making the whole sentence wrong. That is why "SEEM" (verb form) of seeming is present after that.

Please correct me if i am wrong.

Isn't "Deny" the verb?

hmmmm
Well i dont know the answer for ur question but i can tel u this.

Lets take deny to be the verb ... Even then when u plug in seeming (adjective ) ... an adjective is not allowed to modify a very .. only a adverb cam .. so i just know that seeming would be wrong there

Severe and increasingly numerous is parallel , compare "Severe" and "numerous" not "Severe" and "increasingly". As someone pointed out adverb can modify adjectives. "Severe and increasingly" are not modifying "numerous".

as for the original question as to why "seem" is not parallel with "pointing",
"that" refers to deficiencies .

If sentence would have been

critics are pointing to the fact that they are doing something.

then what u say is correct doing and pointing have to be parallel since here we have a "they" which refers to the critics and hence parallelism needs to be maintained.
