Astronomers have recently deduced the age of the oldest living star in the known universe, a metal-poor star that is a fossil formed in the early history of the universe and endured some 13.2 billion years.
A) endured
B) endures
C) enduring
D) it endured
E) is enduring

Should be C.
Living star , indicates present tense and enduring is required.
Has endured is incorrect usage.
Between E and C
in E "is" is not required.
"that is.......... and is enduring some 13.2 billion years" Not correct.

Between E and C, I don't get why E is wrong.
We can analyse it as:
that "is a fossil....." and "is enduring..:

Option C is good,in E "is" seems to be redundant,not required.
Choose the one which serves the purpose and is short!!

Two reasons that is enduring is incorrect:

The regular present tense can't be used to describe an action that has taken place over some 13.2 billion years.

Both formed and enduring are adjectives modifying the fossil: a fossil formed...and enduring. If the sentence were to say a star that is a fossil...and is enduring, then enduring would refer not to the fossil but to the star. This would change the intended meaning.

my pick would be, E- is enduring...
is has been added to maintain parallelism after- that "is' a fossil.... (therefore) "is enduring"...

i have solved the problem
endured cannot be a verb because it is object to noun main verb (is)

Hi Mitch,

I understand the parallelism b/w participles. Can u please explain why Op A is wrong. "endured" is also acting as a participial (past) so formed can be parallel to endured.

To be enduring means to be remaining in existence.

To be endured means to be suffered. A pain endured by millions means a pain suffered by millions.

Endured does not convey the intended meaning of the sentence. The fossil is not being suffered.
