A controversial figure throughout most of his public life, the Black leader Marcus Garvey advocated that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom.

(A) that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom

(B) that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him

(C) that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him

(D) some Black's returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom

(E) some Black's return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa

I think A. is correct.

B. changes meaning
C. "which was the land which" is poor
D. and E. "some Black's return/ing" is incorrect.

the sentence when read without the parenthesis "to him" reads :

"MG advocated that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that symbolized the possibility of freedom" - makes complete sense, "the land that symbolized..." modifies Africa. the parenthetical "to him" provides some extra information on to whom it symbolizes freedom. this term is in parentesis as it is not essential to the meaning of the sentence.

I kicked it out because it sounded awkward and I thought "the African land" changed the meaning.

Ans is A. It can not be D. By the way it is the question from SC-1000 and there also ans is A. So please double check.

african land doesn't change the meaning, it is the word 'symbolizing' that presents the ambiguity..
that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him

here symbolizing can refer to the black returning to the land or the african land..
hence ambiguous..

Hi Ket,

As per my understanding without comma + ing modifier modifies the immediately preceding noun/noun phrase....which is African land here....

if it would have been comma + ing modifier then it could have modified....clause...ie. black returning....

Please tell what I am missing here.... or there can be someother reason to kick out B ?

Thanks
Mohit
