Usage of merely [adverb] summarizing is awkward........we require simple tense summarize in order to maintain clarity in the sentence.

IMO A, does is parallel with constructs and sumarizing is parallel with dealing:)

Semi-colon - is that the tricky part?

Hi,

A little confusion - there is a semi-colon at the end of the first part of the sentence. Can this affect the parallelism structure of the sentence? Because a semi-colon differentiates a phrase or clause of a sentence from the rest of it.

So, option A seems to be right

Summarizing - gerund

Question: can we use an 'Adverb' to modify a 'Gerund'

EDIT -- the parallelism also comes into play. Summarize ... constructs [parallel]

Hey guys,

This one has to be E. Note that, in A, we have a comparison..."more than". And since the first portion is "Degler does" the second should be in the same form "summarize" (indicative tense verb vs. indicative tense verb).

You also have "he constructs" later in the sentence, also in the indicative tense, so E keeps all of the "what Degler does" verbs consistent. "Summarizing" is present-tense (or a gerund/noun) and therefore doesn't fit in that timeline or comparison.

Note also that B and D make "Degler's study" the subject of the sentence, but after the semicolon we have "he" as the subject - we need to lead with Degler as the subject to set up "he" later in the sentence.

And while we're at it... C mixes verb tenses illogically. The first portion talks about what Degler "has done". But later we're stuck with saying what Degler "does". We're fixed with the indicative tense after the semicolon, so only E can be correct here.
