Hi,

How hard is the Toefl English test compared to gmat English?
I get about 40 on the verbal part of the Gmat on various CATS (haven't took the real test yet...).
Will it be enough for me to score >110 on the Toefl without too much preparation? Or do you think I need to prepare for the Toefl?

Thx

At the outset, there is no comparison between TOEFL and GMAT English. In fact, the GMAT is not a test that tests your English. It tests your Verbal ability that is based on English. Reading Comprehension is the section that one can remotely compare with that of the TOEFL; however, in my opinion, there is no comparison between the two. The GMAT RC tests your reading comprehension and asks questions that require aptitude, while the TOEFL RC is not that comprehensive. Both the tests have an essay/writing sample. While GMAT AWA prompt asks you to write an argumentative essay, TOEFL writing response is more a summary that an essay in Writing section.

Hello
I passed the TOEFL, and then after I have read the article https://www.mba.com/exams/gmat/about-the-gmat-exam/why-take-the-gmat-exam I wanted to pass the gmat.

When comparing the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) English sections, it's essential to understand the distinct purposes and focus of each test. Here are some key points to consider in the TOEFL vs. GMAT English comparison:

TOEFL:

Purpose: The TOEFL is specifically designed to evaluate non-native English speakers' English proficiency for academic purposes, such as studying at English-speaking universities.
Content: The TOEFL focuses on assessing English language skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing through academic tasks and scenarios.
Format: The TOEFL is a standardized test that is typically conducted online with a focus on academic English proficiency.
Scoring: TOEFL scores are used by universities to determine applicants' language readiness for academic programs.

GMAT English:

Purpose: The GMAT is a standardized test used for admissions to graduate management programs, including MBA programs.
Content: The GMAT's English section evaluates reading comprehension and critical reasoning skills within a business context.
Format: The GMAT English questions are integrated into the Verbal Reasoning section, along with other question types like critical reasoning and sentence correction.
Scoring: The GMAT Verbal Reasoning section contributes to the overall GMAT score, which is a key factor in graduate business school admissions.

Key Differences:

Focus: The TOEFL primarily assesses general English language skills for academic settings, while the GMAT English section evaluates critical thinking and analytical skills within a business context.
Applicants: TOEFL is for non-native English speakers applying to English-speaking academic programs, while GMAT is for individuals seeking admission to graduate business programs.
Scoring Impact: TOEFL scores are specifically used to assess language proficiency, while GMAT scores reflect a broader range of skills and aptitudes for graduate business studies.

Understanding these differences can help you prepare effectively for either the TOEFL or GMAT English sections based on your specific goals and target programs. If you are applying to business school programs, focusing on the GMAT English section's unique requirements would be beneficial, while the TOEFL is ideal for academic English language proficiency assessment.
