Which approach do you use. The skimming approach, only read first paragraph and then first sentence of following paragraphs. Or reading the entire passage?

I also have a doubt relating to the reading strategy.
When I find that I am well acquainted with the passage theme,I appply the skimming approach.
When I find the theme quite new,I find it better to read the entire passage(though it takes more time) as it helps me grasp the thematic content.

I wanted to ask the GMAT experts on the forum:-Is it advisable to use different strategies in different circumstances?
Is it counterproductive??
