Answer should be D.

Actually, you can narrow it down to Option D and E.

E has which and which modifies the noun preceding it.
In this case, that noun is court.

I'm going with E. The opening clause is meant to modify The Tale of Genji, so we should say Written......, The Tale of Genji.... and option E is the only one which does this.

ABC can be ruled out - modifier error.
E - usage of which as essential modifier is awkward, we should use 'that' here.

IMO D.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

I go for D. But still i have a doubt in that. Is "Considered to be" a right usage here?

The OA is D. The reason that I posted this one is that I don't consider this question correct, because according to official GMAT "consider to be" is not idiomatic. D is the best answer, but it is just to choose the lesser of two evils.
The bottom line for officials: can we expect such questions on real exam?

in e which refers to court and thus is incorrect.

moreover considered by x to be z is wrong.
