. According to the enrollment statistics published by U.S. medical schools, the number of female medical students is equivalent to the number of male medical students currently enrolled in medical school.
(A) the number of female medical students is equivalent to the number of male medical students currently enrolled in medical school
(B) as many female as male students are currently enrolled in medical school
(C) the number of female students is as many as that of male students currently enrolled in medical school
(D) as great as the number of female is the number of male students currently enrolled in medical school
(E) female and male students are currently enrolled in equal numbers in medical school


Hi, In the above question, the correct answer is B. However I want to understand why E cannot be an answer?

Here are my reasons why E could be wrong:

1. "equal numbers" should modify male and femal students. Not enrolment.

Suppose there were already 200 male and 50 female students present.
In 2010, 200 male and 200 female students enrolled. (As per option E)

Total becomes, 400 male, 250 female
These numbers are not equivalent. But the intended meaning is that these should be equal.

Hope this helps!!


Though doesnt look much convincing, I want to point the second difference also.
2. Students enrol in a course. So, "Equal numbers" could also mean a course.

Here the number of female students is compared with number of male students.

Number of female students at not are enrolled as many as male students,but not in equal numbers.

Option E change the meaning of the sentence.

I read many other posts also for this question.
But I could not find a convincing explanation to eliminate E or A.

I don't understand why respected people are not underlying the question.

Why A is wrong?
