Hi everyone, here is a question that I found in the Manhattan Reviw Book:

A powder derived from the North American Echinacea flower, which has been effective in preventing colds, is grown by many small farmers out West.

a) same
b) A derivative, which has been effective in preventing colds, of North American Echinea flower.
c) A North American Echinea flower derivative, which has been effective in preventing colds
d) The North American Echinacea flower has a derivative which has been effective in preventing colds, that
e) The North American Echinacea flower, a derivative of which has been effective in preventing colds

The answer is E. But can somebody explain me why C is wrong?
Thanks in advance.

remove the sentence between commas and read.

A North American Echinea flower derivative is grown by many small

You can grow the flower's derviative.. you can grow the flower.

Let us first find what makes the sentence incorrect.
1) which should refer directly to the noun before it here its is referring to Echinacea flower which is not intended A ,B out
2) waht is grown by many small farmers ? derivative or the flower itself?
obviously the flower ---> C D out.

E wins.

Hope that helps.

Basically it's like others have said remove the sentence in between the commas. The farmers aren't growing the derivative, they are growing the flower.

Why it cant be B ?... which refers to derivative .....on removing the sentence in btwn commas , the derivative of the flower is grown....

I cudnt spot any errors .. please explain

Senthil

It seems impossible until its done.

I go with E too..

option B is wrong because it says

A derivative, additional information......., is grown....

Derivative is not grown, The flower is grown.

You can grow the flower's derviative.. you can grow the flower.

Correction: You cant grow the flower's derviative.. you can grow the flower

In short, C changes the meaning
