In choice E, is "being" actually used in an incorrect way here, and not just avoided like the plague as it usually is?

"Being" is used awkwardly in E. You're right that it usually IS a plague , but there ARE instances where "being" could be correct, such as when it is used as a modifier or used as a gerund.

(Here being is 'being' used as a modifier, so it's ok!)
