The man was always aware, sometimes proudly and sometimes resentfully, that he was a small-town Midwesterner who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him.
(A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him
(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him
(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was
(D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him
(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he


OA is E but i feel C is correct?

1st af all eliminate A, B and D because they use "him" instead of neceassary "he".

You are left with
(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was
who had been thrust into
here thrust is used as adverb, but thrust here should be noun
he was
The man was aware that he was a small-town Midwesterner who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was
he was - incorrect


(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he

OA is E but i feel C is correct?

Usage of "Past perfect tensss-had been " is futile ( as there are no more than one actions or events in the past...)

Thsi eliminates B and C


Second as the descriptions refer to the person ( subject), use subject pronouns..He..Eliminate A and D


Only E meets this crtiteria

'had been' has gotta be wrong here, since it identifies which event occured first.

had been in this case indicates that he was thrust first, which is not possible before others having dominated this world.

firstly its difficult to choose between C and E.But if we look closely..

the main flaw is to use the pronoun in the subjective form.Also..

(A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him


(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him

(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was

IMO " had been" is not a problem.We can use "past perfect" and then too it will make sense.

the flaws are:
1) "had been" past perfect and past tense "was" are used in the same clause.
2)there is a problem of parallelism.

world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished

the words wealthier, better-educated and polished should be parallel.

D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him


E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he

OA E uses simple past... if you can express a feeling in simple tenses, do not go for perfect tenses...Anyway, Pronoun error is blatant too so any way option will be eliminated

(Pronoun) to get correct meaning must refer back to the correct antecedemt i.e "The Man"

"The man" serves as a subject and hence must be addressed by "subject pronoun"

hence, we need who

Pls let me know if you think otherwise.

I don't understand why (E) is correct. In my opinion, because the author compares (wealthier, better-educated, and more polished) people with the man, and the past participle dominated leading the phrase by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people acts as a modifier of a world, a world must be the subject of (was) dominated (by), of which (wealthier, better-educated, and more polished) people is the object. Meanwhile, as the term of the man after than in the sentense should be parallel with the pattern of (wealthier, better-educated, and more polished) people , which is actually a subject, him is needed here rather than he. So I think (E) is not correct.
