The highest temperature on May 1st, this year, was 2.8C higher than that on the same date last year. Moreover, the lowest temperature on May 1st, this year, was 11.3C lower than the highest temperature on that day. The lowest temperature on May 1st, this year was 18.9C. What was the highest temperature on May 1st, last year?

A. 23.4C
B. 24.8C
C. 25.9C
D. 27.4C
E. 28.9C

Assume that x is the highest temperature of May 1st, last year.
The highest temperature of May 1st, this year, is x + 2.8.
The lowest temperature of May 1st, this year is x + 2.8 – 11.3 = 18.9
Then we have x= 18.9 + 11.3 – 2.8 = 27.4

Therefore, D is the correct answer.
