The fluctuation in interest rates over the past few years have proven troublesome for both borrowers and investors.

(A). have proven troublesome for both borrowers and investors.

(B). has proven troublesome for both borrowers and investors.

(C). had proven troublesome for both borrowers and investors.

(D). has proven troublesome both for borrowers and investors.

(E). has been trouble for both borrowers and investors.

Answer is B. Why cannot answer be E ?

E - trouble is adjective modifying verb 'has proven'. Ideally we would expect an adverb. Troublesome is an adverb

proven is a participle so has/have proven is correct.


In E - "has been" is an auxilliary verb and should be along with a main verb ( ing form) and this sentence lacks a main verb.

trouble is the wrong word usage in context of this sentence.........

IMO B.

has proven - so B D E are right. Among them D uses both for X and Y - it should be for both X and Y.
E is wrong as active Verb is preferred over Noun form.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
