The five hundred largest manufacturing firms in the United States produce goods that are worth almost as much as that of the four hundred thousand firms that remain.

(A) that are worth almost as much as that of the four hundred thousand firms that remain
(B) of a worth that is almost as much as that of the four hundred thousand firms that remain
(C) almost as much in worth as those of the remaining four hundred thousand firms
(D) almost as much in worth as that of the remaining four hundred thousand firms
(E) worth almost as much as those of the remaining four hundred thousand firms

[spoiler]I understand why E is correct, but I don't know how to eliminate C. Is it because worth in option c comes between as much ....as idiom?[/spoiler]

I'm no expert, just trying to work on my skills. If I've made any mistakes please bear with me.

1. x is almost as much in worth as y
2. x is worth almost as much as y.

In my opinion the 2nd usage is correct.
