The fear of rabies is well founded; few people are known to recover from the disease after the appearance of the clinical symptoms.

(A) few people are known to recover from the disease after the appearance of the clinical symptoms

(B) few people are known to have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms have appeared

(C) there are few known people who have recovered from the disease once the clinical symptoms have appeared

(D) after the clinical symptoms appear, there are few known people who have recovered from the disease

(E) recovery from the disease is known for only a few people after the clinical symptoms appear


Between A and B????

B. All the verbs are parallel: 'founded', 'recovered' and 'appeared'.

Well founded is idiomatic usage... Also recovery can only be after the symptoms have appeared... So symptoms precede the recovery... So methinks that symptoms should be in past perfect.. Ie. symptoms had appeared..

Corect me if I am wrong.. BTW I chose A

few things to remember before we solve this question:
1) Few - negative Eg. Few books are available. ( there r hardly any books available).
2) A Few - positive Eg. A few books are available. ( atleast, there r some books available).

here the author wants to indicate that there is hardly any known person who has recovered from rabies.
hence eliminate C D n E.

In B the usage of present perfect tense (have recovered) is incorrect as correctly pointed by varunrajwade.

hence IMO A.

IMO B...
A looks more like a normal process whereas B looks like an observation/ finding...n only an observation can b well founded...
nt realllly sure though...

I think the answer should be A since the statement is a fact and all facts are presented in simple tense. Hence no need for the "have recovered" or "have appeared".

Also the use of "once" is weird. It seems to say once the symptoms appear you recover from rabies. The statement actually means after the symptoms appear you recover from rabies and not immediately when the symptoms appear.

I am not convinced that the use of the present perfect tense is appropriate here especially when talking about the clinical symptoms. My take is that first the symptoms appeared and then the people started getting better so present perfect seems a bit inappropriate.

Please correct me if I'm wrong - My answer would be 'A'

The source is SC test- 2
I am not sure , there might be wrong answers in it , so guess we'll settle with A

I think 'B' is wrong because 'have appeared' doesnt fall in line with the tense of the sentence.

I had marked B,

I have logic to explain this..

Present perfect is used when two things happen simultaneously,

have appeared and have recovered are parallel in time...

(well almost parallel in time... I have seen a similar question where it said that the voting in the election and winning in the election are in about the same time )
