The distance from point A to point B is 15 meters, and the distance from point A to point C is 11 meters. If d is the distance, in meters, between points B and C, then which of the following must be correct?

A. 0 < d < 24
B. 1 < d < 25
C. 2 < d < 26
D. 3 < d < 27
E. 4 < d < 28

Hi richachampion,

In this question, the important thing to note is that the straight line will give you the shortest and the longest routes. What I mean is that start with point A, draw a point B which can be assumed to be 15 metres long.

Now, point C can start from point A in any direction and have a length of 11 metres. However, for the shortest route, it will lie on the line segment AB to make the line segment ACB. In that AC = 11 metres, CB (or BC) = 4 metres and AB = 15 metres.

For the longest route, the same line will need to be extended in the other direction (180 degree). Thus, this line segment will be CAB with CA = 11 metres, AB = 15 metres and CB (or BC) = 26 metres.

In short, 4 =< BC >= 26 (minimum length can be 4 metres and maximum length can be 26 metres).

However, since the options do not have a less than/equal to or a greater than/equal to options D is the best option which covers this range. Rest of the options leave out vital parts of the range. Even D which could confuse some candidates eliminates the possibility of BC = 4 metres.

So, the answer is D.

A=0..........C=11...B=15
Here, BC=4.
Since it does not have to be true that d>4, eliminate E.

B=-15..............A=0..........C=11
Here, BC=26.
Since it does not have to be true that d<24, d<25 or d<26, eliminate A, B and C.

The correct answer is D.
