What time did the continuous rain stop yesterday?

(1) The continuous rain started at 6:30 am, yesterday, and it was seen continuous at 3 hours before it really stopped.

(2) The official weather report that came at 9:30 am, yesterday, announced, "Only 40 percent of today's continuous rain is more to come".

Statement 1: We dont know what time (3 hours before end time) the rain was seen to be continuous. Insufficient.

Statement 2: We dont know what time the rain started to evaluate how much 60% of rain means.

Both together: we know the start time, 6:30, and we know at 9:30am (3 hours later) there had all already been 60% of the rain. So the remaining rain will pour in the next 2 hours. Sufficient. Choose C.

Is it E?

A - doest not give info when it actually stopped.

B-40% is more to come announced at 9:30 am ...again no info when this 40% will stop.

Combining both no extra info.. though it can be deduced that 60% took 3 hours so 40% will take 2 more hours. However, this assumption for rain...

Very good point is raised by Hemant! But, in case it is continuously referred as 'continuous rain'; can't we take (not assume) it as if it is pouring at a constant speed? Am only asking! :)

can we assume that the rate is constant? after all it could be drizzling for an hour, rain harder 3 hours later, etc. so just because there's 40% more rain coming does that mean 40% in volume or 40% in terms of time?

I'd go with E but this is a real thought provoker

Now 40% more rain to come means 10% in an hour then in next 10% and so on...

Nowhere it is mentioned that rate was constant.

Lets not assume anything...and leave this question to OA.

Dear Hemant,

Your this statement contradicts your own answer as you admit here that it is pouring at a constant rate, this could lead the answer to C eventually.

I am fond of making my own questions for CAT/GMAT/GRE/SAT Quantitative, and the first appearance of those questions before its users is served without OA, because till then the OA happens to be IMO only. I haven't calculated it though, but roughly speaking, 30 percent of all questions that I have posted so far to this forum, are the questions that I have aired just to see that how many answers support IMO (not displayed at the least). This one was posted 30 minutes after it was made.

The OA to this question, as set by me is E. But see, I am still hesitating to call E the OA. We still have a lot to read from the C'supporters.

I wanted to give an explantion that we can not assume it if you go by my reasoning of 10% then it will take 4 hours. May be I should have give one more example to express what I was thinking...

I am still up for E.

Examples that I wanted to give were

10% 10% 10% 10% or 5% 5% 5% 5% 5% 5% 5% 5%

See here you are not sure that whether it will take 4 hours or more.
