The army cutworm moth is a critical source of fat for as many as a third of Yellowstone National Park's grizzly bears; they overturn rocks to find them, as many as 40,000 per bear in a single day.

(A) bears; they overturn rocks to find them, as many as
(B) bears; overturning rocks to find the insects, up to
(C) bears, overturning rocks to find them, as many as
(D) bears, and they overturn rocks to find them, up to

very good question. I fell for D but the answer is E.

At first I thought it cannot be E because "which" cannot modify living beings, here is a nice explanation from Ron about the same:

I got to E by elimination. Had the same thought that which cannot refer to bears.

E should be the ans. [took 1 min 8 secs]

We can eliminate options A, C and D straight away, as they use an ambiguous 'them'. Notice that moth is singular.

Between option B and E, B can be eliminated as the clause used after the semicolon cannot stand on its own. (it should)

In option E, 'which' is the right reflective pronoun used. It refers to the noun just preceding it.
