24) The inhabitants of Somalia greeted the measures outlawing polygamy with a similar defiance that welcomed the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the nineteen-twenties.
a. same
b. a similar defiance which welcomed
c. a similar defiance to what welcomed
d. a defiance similar to that which welcomed
e. the same defiance welcoming

the answer's D. I kind of understand why D is correct, but I don't understand why A is grammatically incorrect. I got this question from one of our downloadable notes and I still wasn't clear from the explanation.

Thanks.
