That vs Which

by Ryandmitri » Wed Apr 27, 2011 2:15 am
Starting Thursday, Wal-Mart Stores is planning to offer free shipping on its Web site
on almost 60,000 gift items, including many toys and electronics

A. is planning to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items,
including
B. plan to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items,
including
C. plans to offer free shipping on their Web site on almost 60,000 gift items,
including
D. will plan to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items,
including
E. is planning to offer free shipping on its Web site on almost 60,000 gift items,
that include

Had narrowed the options down to A and E. Chose E. But I understand that E is wrong because of the use of 'that' after the comma. Can someone please explain this in detail...

Thank You.

I think another problem with E is that 'many' is not compatible with 'include'. And most importantly 'including' is one special ing modifier most preferred over others.

it is true that modifiers starting with "that" should not ever be preceded by commas. (you've asked for further explanation of this rule, but i'm not sure what sort of further explanation could be given.)

HOWEVER,
if another modifier -- such as an appositive or other description -- is inserted between the original noun and the "that" modifier, then that modifier may be flanked by commas.
for instance:
basketball players wear shirts that display identifying numbers.
basketball players wear shirts, called jerseys, that display identifying numbers.

both of the above sentences are correct. the second one does contain a comma directly before a "that" modifier, but that comma is acceptable because it's part of the preceding modifier (comma + "called jerseys" + comma). so you have to be careful!

Thanks a lot Ron, i was using this rule but somewhere i was not sure that this rule is perfect or not. Your post helped a lot.

Thank you very much
