I favor option C.
A - Not sure
B - Nor with Neither
D - incorrect paralleism
E - without....no underlining (redundant)

The underlined part in the original sentence does not match option A buddy :)

IMO C.

should be and contain - parallel verb forms.

A - have writing in them or not be underlined - too wordy, them is unnecessary/redundant
B - should followed by base form of the verb - lacks parallelism
C - should be X and (should) contain Y - parallel construction
D - no writing in them or be underlined - wordy and them is redundant as in A
E - same error as B and A.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
