The figure above shows the dimensions of an isosceles triangle in terms of x. What is the area of the triangle?

(A) 24
(B) 30
(C) 48
(D) 60
(E) 96

Answer is C.

Explain please.
We know that it's an isosceles triangle, therefore we know that:

2x - 2 = 3x - 8

since those two sides must be equal.

So we solve that equation to get:

x = 6

Now we know that the height is 6 and the base is 3x - 2 = 18 - 2 = 16

Area = (1/2)*base*height
Area = (1/2)*16*6 = 8*6 = 48... choose C.
