Tepper R2 : application Essay doubt

by kriti87 » Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:57 pm
Hi,

I'm applying to the Tepper school in R2. I have a query in the following essay topic:

"Describe an obstacle you have faced in your professional or academic life. How did you overcome this obstacle and how did it foster your development?"

I wanted to know, can I explain how I overcame a personal tragedy and how it affected my academic life. or does the obstacle have to be specifically from my professional / academic life? How do I approach this essay? I've checked out numerous forums etc..but I thought I could get the best advice here. Please help.

Thanks

You have to connect the 'tragedy' to the question being asked. Perhaps you could say how the tragedy fostered your academic/personal/academic development. Choose the outcome that is the strongest. Don't dwell on the tragedy, mention it and say how it helped or pushed you to develop in said sphere.

Well, as interesting as your story may be, rule number one is: answer the question asked. So if you can tie your personal tragedy into work or life (like it happened while you were at school or at a specific point of your professional life, then go for it).
